Montana State University Freshman and Premier Scholarships

Horatio Alger Montana Scholarship Program
Deadline: October 30, 2011

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation
Deadline: October 31, 2011

50 students will receive awards of $20,000 for college and 200 students will receive awards of $10,000 for college.  Requirements: CURRENT high school (or home-schooled) senior attending school in the United States anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application, planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution, carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.  To apply visit www.coca-colascholars.org

New Student Scholarships at MSU Billings

AXA Achievement Scholarship
Deadline: December 1, 2011

Sponsored by the AXA Foundation in association with U.S. News & World Report, is open to high school seniors who plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university.  Applicants must be United States citizens or legal residents and must have demonstrated ambition and self-drive as evidenced by an outstanding achievement in a school, community, or workplace activity.  Application and Info available at

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship

There will be 500 four-year awards. Any high school senior who is a US citizen is eligible. Male and female students compete separately for identical awards. Criteria for this award include scholarship, leadership and financial need. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award
Deadline: December 15, 2011

Must be a high school senior planning to enroll in an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university. Applicant should demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and intiative such as: starting own business (design website, lawn mowing, dog walking, tutoring) or participation in organizations such as DECA. The NFIB Young Entrepreneur Foundation is accepting applications for the 2011 NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards. Beginning midnight, October 1 through 11:59 p.m., December 15, 2010, any high school senior graduating in 2011 may apply online for a chance to win a scholarship valued from $1000-$10,000. NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards are open to any graduating high school senior entering their freshman year fall 2011 at an accredited (not for profit) two- or four-year university, college or vocational/technical institute.

Touchmark Foundation Scholarhip-Nursing

Montana Resident Entering Student Scholarship Program

The Montana Resident Entering Student Scholarship Program draws together many endowed scholarships and donations into a single scholarship pool. New freshman and new transfer students are eligible. Davidson Honors College Presidential Leadership Scholarship--U of M

KFC Colonel's Scholar
Deadline: Opens Dec. 1, 2011 and closes Feb. 8, 2012

Must be graduating from high school this academic year (between 12/1/11 and 8/31/12), planning to enroll in a public college or university within your state of legal residence, have a minimum high school cumulative GPA of 2.75, planning to pursue a bachelor's degree, be a US citizen or permanent resident and demonstrate financial need. University of Montana Presidential Leadership Scholarship

The Presidential Leadership Scholarship is the University of Montana's premier academic scholarship, recognizing outstanding talent, academic performance and contribution to the community. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees

AFSCME Family Scholarship Program awards ten $2000 scholarships to high school seniors that will be renewed for $2000 each year for a maximum of four years, provided the student remains in a full-time course of study. Student must be a graduating senior and must be a daughter, son or financially dependent grandchild of an active or retired AFSCME member. The student ust also be an applicant to an accredited college or university and subsequently accepted as a full-time student in a four year degree program. Montana Jaycee Foundation

Must be a graduating high school senior, residing in Montana, who will be enrolling in first year of full-time study at an accredited post-secondary college, university, or vocational school. Recipients are based on involvement, leadership, honors and awards, employment, personal statement, financial statement, scholastic achievement and references. Burger King Scholars Program

Burger King offers $1000 awards in addition to $5000 regional and a $25,000 "King" National Award that must be used for educational expenses, such as tuition or required fees and books, and must be used during the first year of college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Gates Millennium Scholars
Deadline: January 11, 2012

GMS will select 1000 students to receive a good through graduation scholarship for the college or university of their choice.  Students must be African American, American Indian/Alaska native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American.  For other criteria, visit www.gmsp.org

National MS Society, Greater Northwest Chapter

Amount $1000-$3000.  Guidelines for The Society's Scholarship Program are as follows. Applicant must have MS or have a parent living with MS, plan to attend accredited post-secondary school for the first time, and live in Washington, Montana or Alaska. MSU-Billings Chancellor's Excellence Award Application
Deadline: January 15, 2012

The Chancellor's Excellence Awards are Montana State University Billings' most prestigious scholarship awards, recognizing academic achievement as well as leadership qualities.  Chancellor's Excellence Awards will be awarded each year to freshmen entering Montana State University Billings in September.  Recipients receive $3000 per academic year.  Scholars who meet or exceed all of the renewal criteria may expect to have their awards renewed for four years for a maximum award of $12,000.  To apply for the Chancellor's Excellence Awards visit: http://www.msubillings.edu/finaid/scholarships.htm

Dr. Seuss OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO! College Scholarship Program

National Honor Society Scholarship

Montana Electric Cooperatives'Association (MECA)
Deadline: January 31, 2012

Montana Electric Cooperatives' Association (MECA), of which Hill County Electric Cooperative (HCE) is a member, will again be awarding two scholarships in the amount of $500 each. Applicants or applicants' parents or guardians must be a member of an electric cooperative that belongs to MECA. FRS Scholarship
Deadline: February 1, 2012

Another scholarship available to dependents of TTC and CMC subscibers graduating from high school is the Foundation for Rural Service scholarship. This program will award twenty-five $2000 scholarships nationally. TTC and CMC will make a $500 matching contribution if one of the winners is from our service area, bringing the total award to $2500. Applications are available with Mrs. Spinler. Basin Electric Scholarship

Lowe's Scholarship

Lowe's will award 140 $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors who intend to enroll full-time in college. The Lowe's Scholarship is available to all eligible students within the United States, including Lowe's employees and their children. Eligible candidates must: be a current high school seniors , maintain a minimum 3.25 Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale), and demonstrate a history of commitment to their community through leadership activities, community service and/or work experience

North Central Montana Cattlewomen
and North Central Montana Stockgrowers Scholarship

Minimum of $500.  High school seniors and college sophomores in the membership area: Blaine, Hill and Northern Chouteau.  Counties are eligible to apply.  Individuals intereted in the fields of elementary education, agriculture and family and consumer science that includes education, extension, foods, nutrition and dietetics.  The student must have maintained a "C" average in school.  Applications and additional information are available in Mrs. Spinler's office.

Northwest Farm Credit Services Scholarship

Farm Credit Services Scholarship
To be eligible for the program, students must be a:

  • Son or daughter of a current Northwest Farm Credit Services' customer
  • Current customer or customer's spouse returning to higher education
  • Current customer's employee or employee's son or daughter
  • High school senior or a college junior, sophomore or freshman (when applying) 
  • Scholarship winners will be selected based on school and community involvement, scholastic performance, and educational goals and needs. Any career or major is eligible; however, a preference will be given to those students who plan to pursue an ag-related career.

Robert Byrd Scholarship

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded program administered by the Office of Public Instruction to recognize exceptioanlly able high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education.  Students must be a graduate of a public or private secondary school or have received the recognized equivalent of a high school diploma (GED), a Montana resident and a U.S. citizen.  They must also have applied or been accepted for enrollment at an institution of higher education, certify that he/she is not ineligible to receive assistance as a result of default on a federal student loan or other obligation, have a 3.60 or higher GPA in a college preparatory curriculum and have a cumulative score of 2000 on the SAT or 30 on the ACT.  Visit

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY)

The SAMMY awards recognize exceptional high school student athletes across the country who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, on the athletic field and in their communities--and who understand the importance of refuelling their bodies with the protein and other nutrients in lowfat or fat free milk.  Applications will only be accepted online at https://www.sammyapplication.com/   Each winner will receive a $7500 college scholarship, an awards weekend at Walt Disney World's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, and the opportunity to be pictured in USA TODAY.

Montana Food Distributers Association (MFDA) Scholarships
Deadline: March 14, 2012

The MFDA awards four scholarships annually in the amount of $1500 each.  Nominees should be associated with the Food industry either by employment or family relationships within the industry.  For example, applicants or their parents or both who are employed at MFDA member businesses are eligible.  For an application and additional application guidelines, see Mrs. Spinler.

Governor's Best and Brightest Scholarships
and Montana University System (MUS) Honor Scholarship
Deadline: March 15, 2012

Students wanting to apply for the Governo's Scholarships or the MUS Honor Scholarship must register and apply on-line at www.scholarship.mt.gov   Once they have registered and completed the online information, the STUDENT must print and mail the application and other required materials directly to: MGSLP-Scholarship Department, PO Box 203101, Helena, MT 59620-3101 If a student is applying for the MUS Honor Scholarship, Mrs. Spinler must sign the applications to certify a student met the Rigorous Core requirement and have been enrolled at an accredited MT high school for the 3 years prior to graduation.  MUS Honor Scholarship recipients will be selected based upon GPA and ACT or SAT scores.  A student must have a minimum GPA of 3.40.  Prospective recipients must be US citizens and meet Board of Regents' rigorous core policy requirements. Montana Clerk and Recorder's Association Scholarship
Deadline: March 15, 2012

The MCAR is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior who will be attending an in-state (Montana) school.  Applications are to be returned to the Hill County Clerk and Recorder, 315 4th St.  Havre, MT  59501   Applications are available in Mrs. Spinler's office.

Hi-Line Health Foundation
Deadline: March 15, 2012

The Dr. R.S. Buker, Jr. Medical Loan is awarded for books and tuition to applicants wishing to enroll in college in a medical field.  The Hattie Gustafson Medical Loan is awarded to a graduate of Hill or Liberty County schools who is interested in a profession in the medical field.  Repayment of loans is established dependent upon completion of the academic program and whether the student returns to work at Liberty Medical Center or Hill County Medical facilities.  Please visit http://hilinehealth.org/ or pick up an application at the foundation office.  Applications are also available in Mrs. Spinler's office.

Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association Scholarship
Deadline March 21, 2012

Two $750.00 scholarships will be awarded for the fall semester of 2012 to a graduating senior who is seeking a career in LOCAL law enforcement.  Recipients will be selected based on need and academic ability as well as career goals  For an application and list of additional eligibility requirements, please see Mrs. Spinler.

US Bank Scholarship

Forty lucky high school seniors/college undergraduates will win a #1000 U.S. Bank scholarship. AAA Mountain West Academics, Athletic & Arts Scholarship

Mountain West is offering four, $1000 scholarships, including a AAA a year basic membership. Students should have a 2.75 GPA or better through the 7th semester, participated in at least 2 years of arts activities including, but not limited to, football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, golf, tennis, and cheerleading. Applicants must be graduating from a high school in AAA Mountain West territory (Alaska, Montana, or Wyoming) and attending a college or accredited technical school in Alaska, Montana or Wyoming. Catching the Dream
Deadlines: March & April

Catching the Dream offers several scholarship programs including: MESBEC (Math, Engineering, Science, Business, Education, Computers), Native American Leadership in Education (NALE) and Tribal Business Management (TBM). Must be a graduating high school senior with a high GPA and ACT/SAT score, be 1/4 or more degree American Indian, and be an enrolled member of a US tribe. Students must be planning to attend an accredited college or university on a full-time basis, and apply to all other sources of funding for which they are eligible. Alert Magazine

Must be a senior planning to attend college after graduation and have a 2.5 GPA. Father Sladich Memorial Scholarship-Carroll College

This is a $1000 to $3000 scholarship for new, full-time students and is renewable through degree completion as long as recipient remians in good academic standing and continues to demonstrate financial need.  Must show verification of enrollment with a Native American Tribe.  Preference given to Montana residents. http://www.carroll.edu/finaid/prostudents/

Diversity Scholarship--Carroll College

Peter Nelson Scholarship

Sons of Norway Heritage Scholarship

$750 scholarship available to graduating senior from Havre High or North Star High School.  Selection will be based on interest in Norwegian culture, academic achievement, participation in school and community activities and financial need.  Students must be enrolled as a full-time freshmen.  The application and additional information is available in Mrs. Spinler's office.

Triangle Telephone Cooperative Central Montana Communications
Deadline: April 1, 2012

Odd Fellow and Rebekah Lodges of Montana

$500 scholarship.  Applicants must have a 3.0 or LESS GPA and plan on attending a higher education institute in Montana.  Interested students must submit the following:  an application, a synopsis of future plans, a paragraph about the family (indicating anyone who is or has been a member of an Odd Fellow or Rebekah Lodge), explanation of financial needs, transcript, photograph of applicant and three letters of recommendation.  Please see Mrs. Spinler for an application.

Horatio Alger Association Montana Scholarship Deadline

Montana School Nutrition Association (MSNA)
Deadline: April 15, 2012

Black Mountain Software

Black Mountain Software is offering a $500 scholarship to Montana students.  All interested 2012 graduating Montana high school seniors who will be attending an accredited institution of higher education, regardless of their field of study are eligible.  A five hundred word essay is required. 2012 applications and instructions for completing the form and the essay requirements will be available at

Youth Serve Montana Scholarship
Deadline:  April 16, 2012

Up to 75 students will receive a $1000 scholarship.  Applicant must submit a completed application and proof of acceptance to one of Montana's Campus Compact member institutions, must have completed 100 hours of volunteer service within a 12 month period  (12 months is defined as the period 12 months prior to the date of application) and must be of high school senior status. Scholarship funds must be used for 2012-2013 college academic year. Montana Coroners' Association Scholarship
Deadline: May 1, 2012

Amount-$500  Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who will maor in criminal justice or the health science field.  They must have a 2.5 or better GPA, enroll as a full-time student in a Montana college or university, and currently live in one of the District 3 counties including: Hill, Blaine, Phillips, Judith Basin, Fergus, Petroleum, Wheatland, Golden Valley and Musselshell.  Applicants must submit proof of enrollment intentions with a major in the appropriate field, letter requesting consideration, transcript, personal resume, outline of career goals and statement of current college education financing.  For an application see Mrs. Spinler.

Montana Farmers Union Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships are made available through the special efforts of the Education Committee and Montana Farmers Union. Must be a high school graduate planning to attend a university, college, community college or college of technology in or out of state; the scholarship must be used the year it is awarded; and Montana Farmers Union family membership dues must be current. Les Irish Memorial Scholarship

Northwestern Scholastic Insurers sponsors this scholarship in memory of Robert Les Irish, longtime executive officer of MHSA and steadfast enthuriast of high school activities.  The Montana High School Association administers the scholarship program on behalf of Northwestern Scholastic Insurers.  One male and one female will be awarded the $500 scholarship on an annual basis.  Go to  http://www.mhsa.org/ and look under current news for a description of eligibility requirements or see Mrs. Spinler for an application

Universal Athletic Scholarship

The Council of Higher Degrees of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Women of the Moose Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors who will attend MSU Northern and who have demonstrated a 2.5 GPA or better.  Please see Mrs. Spinler for an application and a list of required documents.

Nellie Strissel Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by the Nellie Strissel Memorial Fund.

The applicant must be a graduating senior of North Star High School and plans to attend any college or technical school. All students are encouraged to apply, yet preference will be given to students who have lettered in Speech and Drama and/or participated in any North Star drama production. Selection criterion is based on the following: school and community service performed by the applicant, financial need, educational and career goals, scholastic merit ( GPA, proficiency), overall presentation of the application. Each applicant should submit a transcript, a list of high school activities and community service and an essay of 200 words or less answering the question--"Based on the criterion listed above, why should I be selected for the Nellie Strissel Academic Scholarship?"  The essay and other application materials must be submitted to Mrs. Spinler on or before, Tuesday, April 19th @ 3:30.

Jason Groseclose Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by the Jason Groseclose Memorial Fund.

The applicant must be a graduating senior of North Star High School and plans to attend any college or technical school. Selection criterion is based on the following: school and community service performed by the applicant, financial need, educational and career goals, scholastic merit ( GPA, proficiency), overall presentation of the application.. Applicants must submit an essay of 200 words or less addressing the following question:  "Based on the criterion listed above, why should I be selected for the Jason Groseclose Academic Scholarship?"  A seventh semester transcript verifying scholarship merit is also required.  The essay and other application materials must be submitted to Mrs. Spinler on or before, Thursday, April 19, 2012 @ 3:30.

Tim Langel Memorial Scholarship-$250
Deadline: May 2, 2012

Applicants must be North Star High School seniors, graduate in good standing with a college preparation curriculum. Extracurricular activities and Fine Arts (speech, drama, music) participation will be used as tie breakers. Each applicant should submit a short essay based on eligibility requirements and selection criteria--see Mrs. Spinler for list. Reference materials such as letters of recommendation or grade and activity lists are also preferred.
